Step-by-Step Setup Guides

Setting Up with Amazon Alexa

1

Install the SmartBlinds Skill

Open the Alexa app on your phone, navigate to Skills & Games, and search for "SmartBlinds". Enable the skill and sign in with your SmartBlinds account credentials.

2

Discover Your Devices

Say "Alexa, discover devices" or tap Discover Devices in the Alexa app. The discovery process takes 20-30 seconds. All your motorized blinds will appear as smart home devices.

3

Organize by Room

In the Alexa app, assign each blind to a room (e.g., "Living Room", "Bedroom"). This allows you to control multiple blinds with one command like "Alexa, close the bedroom blinds".

4

Test Voice Commands

Try these commands:

  • • "Alexa, open the living room blinds"
  • • "Alexa, close all blinds"
  • • "Alexa, set bedroom blinds to 50 percent"
  • • "Alexa, raise the kitchen blind halfway"

Setting Up with Google Home

1

Link Your Account

Open the Google Home app, tap the "+" icon, select "Set up device", then "Works with Google". Search for "SmartBlinds" and link your account.

2

Assign to Rooms

Once devices are discovered, assign each blind to the appropriate room in your Google Home structure for organized control.

3

Use Voice Commands

Try these commands:

  • • "Hey Google, open the living room blinds"
  • • "Hey Google, close all window coverings"
  • • "Hey Google, set bedroom shades to 25 percent"
  • • "Hey Google, raise the office blinds"

Setting Up with Apple HomeKit

1

Scan the HomeKit Code

Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap "+", select "Add Accessory", and scan the HomeKit code on your motorized blind motor or in the SmartBlinds app.

2

Configure in Home App

Name each blind and assign it to a room. You can also add blinds to scenes for one-tap control of multiple devices.

3

Use Siri Commands

Try these commands:

  • • "Hey Siri, open the bedroom blinds"
  • • "Hey Siri, close all shades"
  • • "Hey Siri, set living room blinds to 75 percent"
  • • "Hey Siri, activate Good Morning scene"

Smart Automation Ideas

Energy Efficiency

Close blinds during peak heat hours in summer to reduce cooling costs. In winter, open south-facing blinds during sunny hours for natural heating.

  • • Evening: Close blinds 6-8 PM
  • • Random: Vary times ±30 minutes

Entertainment Scene

Create a "Movie Time" scene that closes living room blinds, dims lights, and turns on your TV with a single voice command or button press.

  • • Dim lights to 10%
  • • Trigger: "Movie time" command

Office Hours

Automatically adjust office blinds throughout the day to reduce screen glare while maintaining natural light. Perfect for video calls and focused work.

  • • 2 PM: Close to 50% (reduce glare)
  • • 5 PM: Open to 100% (end of day)

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Voice assistant can't find my blinds

Try these solutions:

  • Ensure your blinds are connected to WiFi and showing online in the SmartBlinds app
  • Unlink and re-link your SmartBlinds account in the voice assistant app
  • Say "Discover devices" again or manually trigger discovery in the app
  • Check that your voice assistant and SmartBlinds hub are on the same WiFi network
Voice commands work but app control doesn't

This typically indicates a local network issue:

  • Check your phone is connected to the same WiFi network as your hub
  • Restart the SmartBlinds app
  • Verify your hub has a solid green light indicating good connection
  • Try power cycling your hub (unplug for 10 seconds, plug back in)
Automations aren't triggering

Check these common causes:

  • Verify the automation is enabled in your voice assistant app
  • Check the trigger conditions are correct (time, sunrise/sunset, etc.)
  • Ensure your hub maintains constant WiFi connection
  • For HomeKit, verify your Home Hub (Apple TV, iPad) is set up correctly
Blinds respond slowly to commands

Improve response time with these steps:

  • Move your hub closer to your WiFi router for better signal strength
  • Reduce WiFi congestion by using the 5GHz band if available
  • Check for firmware updates in the SmartBlinds app
  • Restart your hub and router to clear any network issues
Can't control individual blinds in a room

To control individual blinds:

  • Give each blind a unique name in the SmartBlinds app
  • Use specific names like "Left Bedroom Blind" and "Right Bedroom Blind"
  • In your voice assistant app, verify each blind has a distinct name
  • Use the specific name in commands: "Alexa, close the left bedroom blind"
